What is an EMA whipsaw?

A whipsaw is an EMA crossover that reverses within a few bars. Bullish cross immediately followed by a bearish cross — and the trade between them is small or losing. Whipsaws are common when the market is ranging and the fast and slow EMAs are tangled together.

How does emaindicator.com count whipsaws?

We compute the 9/21 EMA crossovers on 5-minute and 15-minute NIFTY and BANK NIFTY charts over the last 30 calendar days. Any crossover that reverses within 3 bars is counted as a whipsaw. The data is queried from our OHLCV history database, not from a rolling fetch.

Why does whipsaw count matter for trading?

A high whipsaw count over the recent 30 days means EMA crossover signals on that instrument and timeframe have been unreliable. Rather than blindly trading every cross, traders can use the whipsaw count as a filter: if the rate is elevated, prefer breakout, range-fade, or premium-selling strategies; if it is low, EMA crossovers are more trustworthy.
